    Cape Banks, Chardonnay 2016

    ,

♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur ♥ Dry wine

Est. 1883, the Cape Banks Lighthouse is a significant orange monument 30 mins drive from our vineyards in Mount Gambier. Cool growing conditions, rocky mineraly soils, and low-yielding vines have helped create a complex wine - indeed a beacon of a Chardonnay. 2016 is, in our opinion, our best vintage yet. Organically grown grapes are starting to show the beautiful fruit spectrum of cool climate fruit. 50% new French oak Hogshead barrels for 9 months, going through malo-latic (2nd ferment) changing the malo acids into lactic acid, the same as in milk and butter, giving it a creamy mouth feel. 50% select yeast ferment - single ferment only keeping the crisp lime, pink lady apple and mineral notes. This is ‘left on lees’ (the dead yeast after ferment) and is stirred to increase flavours and complexity. Our 2016 vintage was awarded:

    Cape Banks, Pinot Noir 2016

♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur ♥ Dry wine ♥ No residual sugar

Cool growing conditions, rocky mineraly soils, and low-yielding vines have helped create a complex bouquet awash with true Pinot characters. It has hints of vanilla and fresh tobacco over spicy cherry notes. Mount Gambier is the perfect spot to create really good Pinot. The temperatures between Mount Gambier and the most famous French Pinot Noir region – Burgundy are extremely similar. If you add all the temperatures of the growing season together (minus 10 degree base temp), it gives you the Biological Effective Degree Days (BEDD). For 1st Cru Areas of Burgundy, the BEDD is 1242 and 1245 for Mt Gambier. Named after the Cape Banks Lighthouse, which is only 30mins drive from our vineyards, near Carpenter Rocks on South Australia’s rugged South East coastline.

“There is a buzz around pinot grown in Mount Gambier and there’s a good reason for it. Cool growing conditions, rocky, minerally soil, and low-yielding vines contribute to the hints of vanilla and fresh tobacco over spicy cheery notes. This is a more-ish tribute to the local landscape and begs for foggy evenings, an armchair and plenty of time to waste.” 4 Stars, Katie Spain, Wine Writer Adelaide Advertiser 2019

    Razortooth Vineyard, Pinot Noir 2016

♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur ♥ No residual sugar

Grown in cool-climate Mount Gambier, South Australia.

Cool growing conditions, rocky mineraly soils, and low-yielding vines have helped create a complex bouquet awash with true Pinot characters. It has hints of vanilla and fresh tobacco over spicy cherry notes.

Region: Cape Banks, on Mount Gambier’s rugged coastline has the perfect cool-climate and soil conditions for Pinot Noir.

The rocks under the vines are razor sharp, like teeth rising from the soil. We lose a lot of tyres, but this soil makes each vine struggle, keeping the vigour low and flavours complex.

We love the people who make the journey to come and visit our cellar door in Coonawarra; they have Wanderlust. They are the daring explorer, the lover of life with tales of adventures and experiences from their many trips. This wine’s for you, intrepid travellers... Decanting this wine for an hour will allow you to see the true depth of flavour, but also show you that this wine is almost unique at this price - in that it will get better over 10 years. No residual sugar, below organic levels of sulphur, and organically grown. The dense fruit and the soft tannins with allow this wine to age well until 2030.
"Inky in colour pungent fruit aromas with a hint of cigar box cedar adding to the complexity, a big palate with lashings of tight restrained flavours, which will burst forth in due time, and it has a lovely, lingering tight finish. To really enjoy it now, please decant it, or have some patience as in time this will become a REALLY SUPERB WINE!!" Dan Traucki, wine writer

    Angel’s Peak, Coonawarra Shiraz 2016

♥ Organically grown ♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur ♥ Dry wine ♥ No residual sugar

New release, and new label design! The painting of the wings was a 1.8m creation Dru did especially for the label. The name ‘Angels Peak’ is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the lack of ‘peaks’ in the very flat Coonawarra. No residual sugar, below organic levels of sulphur, 18 month in 100% French Oak Barrels (20% new). This wine has seamless mint dark chocolate and coffee notes, over silky mulberries and molasses. Lift this bottle to the light and try to see through the neck. The density of colour shows the quality of the grapes that went into this wine. Since flavour and deep colour in Shiraz comes from the skin, we grow our grapes smaller, about the size of a pea. Food match: Char-grilled eye fillet with wasabi and mascarpone soft cheese. The Golden Orb, Sparkling Coonawarra Shiraz 2015

    ,

♥ Organically grown ♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur

In our Shiraz vineyard lives the Golden Orb spider. During the summer they catch vineyard pests, which is one reason why we haven’t used pesticides in the vineyard for over ten years. What Australia does best! Aged in French oak barrel’s for 2 years, this is a elegant cool climate Shiraz, that will age well until 2025. Our aim is to make a complex sparkling Shiraz. Cool climate Shiraz works great as a sparkling, as the mint notes make it refreshing on hot days when you still want a steak. The oak age has given some nice Christmas cake complexity, but still with fresh blackcurrants and liquorice. The Big Guns, Coonawarra Shiraz 2015

♥ Organically grown ♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur ♥ Dry wine ♥ No residual sugar

The Big Guns is a tribute to my father Trevor Reschke, who was in the Australian national team for clay target shooting, and the state team over 20 times. More often than not you would find him shooting crows in this vineyard just before vintage. To this day crows still avoid it. Here’s to you Trev. We aged this wine for 24 months in the finest French Oak barrels. From these, only the most complex flavours from the finest barrels were selected. This year only 3 barrels made the cut, creating only 100 cases. The Big Guns will age well until 2045. “29yo vines, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, 15 days on skins, matured for 24 months in new French oak. In the elite group of red wines selling for $100 or more ... The wine is deep crimson-purple, and manages to combine full-bodied weight with balance, length and a supple, black fruit mouthfeel.” James Halliday, 2018 96 Points James Halliday Download tasting notes PDF for 2015 vintage Download tasting notes PDF for 2012 vintage

The Head Honcho, Coonawarra Cab 2015

    ,

♥ Organically grown ♥ Vegan Friendly ♥ Low in sulphur ♥ Dry wine ♥ No residual sugar

The Head Honcho was created from our 10 acre single Cabernet vineyard. This vineyard produces small berries full of intense flavour, harvesting a tiny 1 tonne per acre. In the 2012 vintage, it had only organic additives, and no pesticides (none have been used in this vineyard for 10 years). We aged this wine for 24 months in the finest French Oak barrels. From these, only the most complex flavours from the finest barrels were selected. This year only 3 barrels made the cut, creating only 100 cases, with only 888 bottles being released. The French Oak barrels have integrated beautifully in this wine. The darkest of dark berries went into this; blueberry, cassis, and molasses over mint. Extremely long finish. The Head Honcho will age well until 2042.

Small batch and family made wines

We are proudly a small family owned winery based in Coonawarra. Our Coonawarra vineyards produce organically grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, which are planted on Coonawarra’s famous red terra rossa soil.

Just 90km down the road our Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Sparkling Chardonnay, Chardonnay, Rosé, Riesling, and Pinot Noir grapes are grown in Mount Gambier – ‘the coolest region in mainland Australia’. The long growing period allows these grapes to develop an abundance of flavours without losing their crisp freshness.

A Certified Organic Vineyard since 2017

We grow our grapes chemical free and have done so for over 10 years. In 2017 we received certification from the Australian Certified Organic Standards for our Coonawarra Vineyard.

Finding new ways to reduce our impact on the land is very important to us. We grow selected flowers to attract ‘good bugs’ that eat our ‘bad bugs’. We also spend as much time focused on what’s under the ground – soil heath helps keep our vines strong, so pests and disease have less impact. Find out more about how we are working to reduce our impact on the planet with our spray program.

Preservative Free Wine

Sulphur in wine is used as a preservative and helps kill unwanted yeasts, bacteria, and protects wine from oxidation. Too much sulphur in wine can give people allergies and headaches – that’s why all our wines are made with below organic levels of sulphur, less than 100ppm. Australian Food standards allow for a maximum of 250ppm in dry wine, and up to 300ppm for sweet wines.

No Residual Sugar in our Wines

There is no residual sugar in any of our red and white wines. They still taste sweet, showing perfect balance in our vineyards.

* The exception to this is in our Moscato, and just a touch in our Sparkling Shiraz. With these two exceptions, our wines are completely diet friendly; including Ketogenic.

All our wines are vegan friendly and gluten free.
