Grown in cool-climate Mount Gambier, South Australia.
Cool growing conditions, rocky mineraly soils, and low-yielding vines have helped create a complex bouquet awash with true Pinot characters. It has hints of vanilla and fresh tobacco over spicy cherry notes.
Region: Cape Banks, on Mount Gambier’s rugged coastline has the perfect cool-climate and soil conditions for Pinot Noir.
The rocks under the vines are razor sharp, like teeth rising from the soil. We lose a lot of tyres, but this soil makes each vine struggle, keeping the vigour low and flavours complex.
Food match: Tea smoked duck breast and roast potatoes with truffle salt.
The Marquise (Mahr-keez) is a French noblewoman ranking above a countess, and – like this wine – shows elegance, refinement, and sophistication.
The grapes for this cool-climate Chardonnay are grown in Mount Gambier, the coolest mean maximum temperature average of any wine region in mainland Australia.

“Some pretty nifty winemaking decisions have been taken including the time to pick a wild ferment, half in new French Oak (other half in tank), both components undergoing mlf, this is an elegant wine with grapefruit to the fore, but leaving space for a white peach contribution.” James Halliday, 94 pointsDownload the The Marquise Chardonnay 2012 tasting notes .pdf

“Friends are angels that lift you up when your wings have forgotten how to fly. Many people walk through your life, but true friends leave footprints in your heart.” So raise your glass - here’s to friends.
Mount Gambier is even cooler than Malborough in NZ, so the long growing period allows the grapes to develop an abundance of flavours without losing the crisp freshness of true cool-climate grapes.
Single vineyard. Crisp apple and gooseberry notes, perfect for natural oysters, fresh salmon sashimi or chicken salad.
