Visiting Penola & Coonawarra
Penola and Coonawarra are located in the heart of the Limestone Coast, in the south-east corner of South Australia. Because we are so central, it’s the perfect place to be based while you discover surrounding towns.
With over 20 Cellar Doors, award winning restaurants, cafes, boutique gift stores, museums, art galleries, and antique shops – there is loads to see and do in Coonawarra and Penola. We suggest stopping over for a couple of days.
Penola is steeped with history, and was the home to poets John Shaw Neilson, Adam Lindsay Gordon and Will Ogilvie. The picturesque town was also home to Australia’s first Saint Mary MacKillop, who co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph with Father Julian Tenison Woods.
Discover the town’s historical sights and walk down the State Heritage listed Petticoat Lane.
Artists, winemakers and other creatives call Penola home. We love living here and enjoy sharing our great way of life with visitors from around the state, country and globe.
